Sea-sonal Styling: Coastal inspiration for your home

Sophie says...

“Coastal is a truly timeless choice when it comes to interior design. Warming in the winter and perfectly suited to the summer, it's soft tones and relaxed atmosphere add freshness to any home.”

Bright blue skies, waves washing on the shore, a delicious ice cream in-hand... There's nothing quite like a coastal getaway.

From the nostalgia of the British seaside to a glamorous Hamptons getaway, coastal styling has long been a popular choice when it comes to interior inspiration. Creating the perfect vibe for long summer days or whisking you away through the winter, the longstanding popularity of coastal interiors is no surprise, and we've come up with our top three ways you can inject it into your home.

Wave washed palette

Natural tones are key to coastal decoration, with bright whites and soft neutrals creating a breeziness which uplifts the space. Almost minimalist in the predominant use of white, this helps to add airiness to your home and instil the fresh feeling of summer days on the water. Your choice of accent tones can be led by preference or the vibe that you're looking to achieve. True blue tones will add a Mediterranean feel, whilst warmer tones such as soft green or blue with bring a slightly more countrified lilt. Brighter colours such as coral or yellow can also add a sense of tropical intrigue if this is more your style.

Whilst deeper blues may be more on the nautical side of things, adding elements of these tones, such as an armchair or rug, can add a more contemporary feeling to your space. Our Aesop in Linara, Bilberry is the perfect example of this!

Keep it natural

From opening up your windows to bring the outside in, to your choice in decorative accessories, coastal charm is all about using natural textures. Jute rugs, wicker side tables or rustic wooden decorative accessories are just a few places to start. Layering these with different textures such as linen or ceramics, helps to quickly build the easy living feel of coastal decor.

Mixing materials and textures is a core part of this interior style and allows you to let your inner designer loose to create a truly unique space.

Top tip: Head to local stores and markets to see what repurposed accessories you can pick up. Glass bottle turned lamp? Recycled driftwood artwork? All of these will work perfectly for adding a sense of rustic and natural intrigue.

End of the day comfort

At the end of a busy beach day (or any day!) the one thing we all want to get home to is a comfy seat. Whether you're a solo lounger or a snuggler, a core part of any living room aesthetic is furniture you can relax and unwind on. Upgrading your sofa infills to a feather filling is a great way to add that extra squidgy look to your family furniture and add to the relaxed feel of a coastal inspired home.

Along with the warmer weather, summer days tend to bring about an increased risk of sofa spills - especially when you've opted for a lighter hue! That's why a sofa with removable, washable covers is the perfect solution. The relaxed look of the covers adds charm, and the practicality is second to none. Whether it's summer holiday arts and crafts gone awry, someone lounging in sandy shorts or sticky ice cream fingers making a mess, you can simply remove, wash and refit. Practically perfect in no time at all!
